Resource provinces affecting what your clan could and could not make in terms of special buildings and better units. Naval battles that are actually fun Especially in Fall of the Samurai. Realm divide mechanic is an excellent way to keep the end game challenging and slows down your ability to snowball which is an unfortunate side effect of playing Total War well. Siege battles, both attacking and defending, are really really fun The AI wont act like a pansy and will actually take the fight to you and actively try to siege your castles. Unit formations and deployables, tech that actually gave your units new abilities and functionalities. Knowing a clans strengths also allows you to counter them appropriately. Looking at you Rome 2 I love you as well, but man does it take forever to finish a campaign of yours.) Clan traits make each clan unique enough to completely dismiss the fact that 80-90 of the units in the game are the same. Map is just large enough to feel big without feeling like a slog to finish.
